OSHC and your Student visa (condition 8501)
Most international students on a Student visa (subclass 500) must hold Overseas Student Health Cover for the length of their stay. This page explains the rule in plain terms.
What is visa condition 8501?
Condition 8501 requires Student visa holders to maintain adequate arrangements for health insurance while in Australia. For almost all student visa holders, OSHC satisfies this condition. You generally need OSHC from the day you arrive until your visa expires (or your course ends plus a short buffer).
How long must cover last?
Your policy should cover the full period of stay granted by the visa — commonly the length of your course plus a few months. Buying too little cover can mean you do not meet the condition, so match the policy length to your visa, not just your enrolment.
Who is exempt?
- Some students from countries with reciprocal health care arrangements (e.g. certain European countries) may be exempt — but many still choose OSHC for fuller cover.
- Government-sponsored students on specific arrangements may have alternative cover approved by the Department.
What if cover lapses?
A gap in OSHC can mean you are not meeting condition 8501. If you switch insurer or let a policy expire, arrange continuous cover and keep evidence. We can help you compare before you switch.
What OSHC must cover
Under the government's minimum standard, OSHC must include hospital and medical cover comparable to Medicare, ambulance, and limited pharmaceutical benefits. Extras such as dental and optical are optional add-ons that differ by insurer.
