OSHC frequently asked questions
Is OSHC compulsory for international students?
Yes. Most Student visa (subclass 500) holders must hold OSHC for the length of their stay to meet visa condition 8501.
Which insurers can I choose from?
Australia has five DHA-approved OSHC providers: Bupa, Allianz Care Australia, Medibank, nib and ahm. We compare all five.
Do you charge a fee to compare or buy?
No. BlueTier is an authorised OSHC agent and shows the same premiums as buying directly from the insurer. We add no fees.
How much does OSHC cost?
Indicative single premiums for 12 months start from around $585 AUD (nib) up to about $668 (Medibank) on public 2026 rate sheets. Couple and family cover costs more.
Can I switch OSHC provider?
You can switch at renewal, and sometimes mid-policy with a gap certificate. Compare before you commit so you keep continuous eligible cover.
Does OSHC cover extras like dental and optical?
Hospital and medical cover is included; dental, optical and other extras are optional add-ons that vary by insurer and plan.
Are pre-existing conditions covered?
Most pre-existing conditions are covered after a 2-month wait; pregnancy and related services have a 12-month waiting period.
How long must my cover last?
Usually the full length of your student visa, including a buffer after your course ends. Match the policy to your visa, not just enrolment.
