How to choose the right OSHC policy
With five DHA-approved providers offering similar minimum cover, how do you pick? Use this checklist.
1. Start with the minimum standard
All OSHC policies must meet the government’s minimum benefits, so hospital, medical, ambulance and limited pharmaceuticals are baseline. The differences are in price, network, extras and service.
2. Compare the real price for your situation
Single premiums differ by only a little, but couple and family totals vary more. Estimate your actual stay and cover type rather than comparing single prices alone.
3. Check the network and digital tools
- Do you prefer a large direct network (Bupa, Medibank)?
- Do you want a fully digital, app-first experience (nib)?
- Is a familiar brand group important (ahm within Medibank)?
4. Look at extras only if you need them
Dental, optical and physio are optional. If you will use them, compare annual limits and waiting periods — otherwise skip the add-on and keep the premium down.
5. Confirm waiting periods for your needs
If you have a pre-existing condition or are planning a family, the 2-month and 12-month waits matter. Read the product disclosure statement.
6. Keep cover continuous
If you switch, avoid gaps that could breach condition 8501. Arrange the new policy to start when the old one ends.
